What's up? My name is Matt Steffanina and today I'm going to teach you guys how to dance like Ne-Yo. Ne-Yo really doesn't dance a whole lot, but what he does he does really well. Ne-Yo is known for his smooth glides, his walks, his points. He's a very subtle dancer but he comes across really strong in his movement. So I'm going to teach you guys a short combination today that will help you learn to dance better, like Ne-Yo.

We're going to start by stepping on our left foot. As you do this you're going to drop your left shoulder down. From here you're going to step your right foot behind, so pick this knee up to step it out to the side. We're going to repeat the same step on the other side, stepping down with the right foot and dropping the right shoulder, to pick this up again.

This time when you put your right foot down you're going to put it behind your left to turn around to face the side. Let's try that again. This goes one, two and three, four and five, six, from here you're going to kick seven with the front leg, step and turn real strong to the front on eight. You want to make sure that this turn is really clean, so this is seven and eight. You want to use your stomach, squeeze and tighten to stop on that eight.

From here we're going to go into a step touch. You're going to start with your right foot. You're going to go, and one, and two, and three, and four. When you're doing this step it's important to keep a bounce in your knees. And also remember that we want to rock back, so that this step doesn't appear stiff. So each time you step we're going back, back, back, back.

From here you're just going to step out to the front on five and you're going to bring your right hand across your body on six, seven, eight. Your right heel is going to press down, down, down. This is on five, you go six, seven, eight. On one you're going to step your left foot in and just press down your body.

Think really smooth and really chill. Ne-Yo is always really relaxed and in complete control of his show so you don't want to ever appear rushed when you're dancing like Ne-Yo.

Let's try that from the top. Five, six, seven, eight, you go one, two, and three, four and five, turn six, kick, stop. One, two, three, four and stop, groove, groove, groove, down one.

Let's try it with the music. Five, six, seven, eight, one.

It’s a sunny Wednesday afternoon, you’re sitting outside at a cafe in Paris. You see this beautiful person who is about to leave, and you get a warm fuzzy feeling. Unfortunately, you don’t have time to introduce yourself, they’re already gone. Until now, the only thing you could do was maybe post something in the missed connections section of Craigslist or the local equivalent. But a French startup is about to change that.

Happn is a new mobile dating app that uses your phone’s location to show you potential matches. Every time you cross someone’s path, this person’s profile will be added to the top of your feed. It works like Highlight. but for dating.

“The app tells you the story of your life through your movements,” Happn co-founder and CEO and former Dailymotion COO Didier Rappaport told me in a phone interview. “The newsfeed personalization is really important. It’s based on real life and this is key. It could be people you’ve crossed paths with and that you really wanted to see on Happn, it could also be someone you came across 44 times because you live in the same area.”

When you open the app, you get a grid view with your latest encounters. You can scroll down to go further back in time. You tap on a profile, you find all the interactions you would expect from a modern dating app. Like on Tinder, you can say if you like someone so that you know if there is a mutual interest and start chatting for free. Unlike Tinder, you can chat with anyone using credits, even if there is no match.

Last year, French VC firm Alven Capital invested a seed round in the startup when it was still in stealth mode. While the terms of the deal are undisclosed, I’ve heard that it is a significant amount of money for a French seed round. Sixteen people are working for the company right now.

“We invested a seed round without announcing it,” Alven Capital partner Jeremy Uzan told me in a phone interview. “We chose to keep it quiet as the company was still in stealth mode — we didn’t want to put it in the spotlight while the company was still experimenting.”

Yet, Happn is now available in three countries and is getting a bit of traction. The app is quite addictive and a significant portion of the user base is opening it every day — sometimes multiple times a day. So far, around 200,000 people have installed it. Officially launched in March 2014 in Paris, Happn now has 40,000 daily active users. London has nearly 10,000 daily active users after launching in March, and Berlin has between 7,000 and 10,000 daily active users after just a month.

These numbers are still pretty small, but it’s very early for the company. Happn could push its app much more aggressively now that its retention numbers are looking good. That’s why Happn is going to launch its app in every major European city in the next 8 months, and maybe in a big city outside of Europe.

While the company is currently focused on growth, you can purchase credits for a few dollars. Happn will also work with advertisers to sell native ads. According to Rappaport, it will be completely integrated in the app, and you won’t see a banner.

My interest in Able Planet piqued when I learned they offer stereo headphones for those with age associated hearing loss. They also make wireless and noise canceling headphones, even hearing aids, and the common thread between them is Linx Audio technology. Linx Audio is designed to improve speech intelligibility and to reduce harsh distortion to help protect hearing. I'm not an audiologist but I value my hearing and if there is a product to assist those with hearing loss and protect against hearing loss, I'm for it. So I decided to check out a pair of Able Planet NC-300W stereo headphones with noise canceling.

Overview

The NC-300W is Able Planet's entry-level model, a closed-ear headphone with a detachable audio cord and in-line volume control. They come in a zippered hard case with a ¼" headphone jack adapter, an airline jack adapter and a single AAA battery to power the Linx Audio and noise canceling features.

They are very comfortable and have a secure fit around the ears but not too tight. They can be used solely for noise cancellation without the cord or connected to a stereo for music listening. The unique feature is Linx Audio.

Linx Audio

The human ear is a delicate device that loses its sensitivity with increasing age, particularly to high frequencies. Hearing loss is a fact of life never mind the damage that can be caused by too many loud rock concerts.

Linx Audio is designed to improve speech intelligibility for those with age associated hearing loss and to reduce harsh distortions that could damage hearing. It does two things:

It increases the level of high frequency harmonics to enhance speech clarity and make it easier to hear some words and sounds, such as 'f'', 's' and 'th'. Harmonics are overtones of a sound and are important for speech clarity and play a role in the accurate reproduction of music. Its effect is to increase perceived loudness without increasing volume.

Secondly, Linx Audio employs "soft-clipping" to remove undesirable sounds and harsh clipping distortion especially at higher listening levels. Less harshness and reduced distortion is less likely to cause hearing damage and improves listening.

Testing the NC-300W

Overall, the Able Planet True Fidelity headphones are comfortable and very easy to listen to with all kinds of music. With Linx Audio turned on, the harmonics of the upper mids and highs are slightly easier to hear but not out of balance with the rest of the music. It's sort of like turning up the treble a bit, but only the harmonics are affected. Vocal details and some percussion instruments become easier to hear more clearly. There is a noticeable lack of harshness or edginess yet it's easy to pick out musical details. Check out the difference with the Linx Audio simulator on the Able Planet website.

Bass sounds full and warm, although a bit heavy when listening to iTunes on my computer. I had to adjust the equalizer to reduce the bass output even when it was set to 'flat'.

The noise-canceling feature provides excellent sound isolation. The amount of noise reduction is not specified; however, suffice to say that unless you're standing next to a jet engine, they work great.

I like the in-line volume control in the cord. It's very handy and easier to adjust than a volume control on the side of the headphone.

Conclusions & Speculations

Safe listening levels and hearing preservation should be a concern for all who love listening to music. The best speakers and headphones mean nothing if you can't hear the details and subtle acoustic cues that make music and music reproduction so enjoyable.

DTS is also a well-known player in surround sound and has adapted its surround sound process for home use. Basic DTS is a 5.1 system just like Dolby Digital 5.1, but since DTS uses less compression in encoding process, many feel that DTS has a better result on the listening end. Also, while Dolby Digital is mainly intended for the Movie Soundtrack experience, DTS is used in the mixing and reproduction of Musical performances.

DTS has come up with its own 6.1 channel systems, in competition with Dolby Digital EX, referred to as DTS-ES Matrix and DTS-ES 6.1 Discrete. Basically, DTS-ES Matrix can create a center rear channel from existing DTS 5.1 encoded material, while DTS-ES Discrete requires that the software being played already has a DTS-ES Discrete soundtrack. As with Dolby Digital EX, DTS-ES and DTS-ES 6.1 Discrete formats are backwards compatible with 5.1 channel DTS Receivers and DTS encoded DVDs.

In addition to DTS 5.1 and DTS-ES Matrix and Discrete 6.1 channel formats, DTS also offers DTS Neo:6. DTS Neo:6, functions in a similar fashion to Dolby Prologic II and IIx, in that, with receivers and preamps that have DTS Neo:6 decoders, it will extract a 6.1 channel surround field from existing analog two-channel material.

The next step that DTS has taken is to introduce its 11.1 channel Neo:X format. DTS Neo:X takes cues already present in either 5.1 or 7.1 channel soundtracks and creates height and wide channels, enabling a more enveloping "3D" sound. To experience the maximum benefit of DTS Neo:X processing, it is best to have 11 speakers, with 11 channels of amplification, and a subwoofer. However, DTS Neo:X can be modified to work with a 9.1 or 9.2 channel configuration.

Surround Sensation creates phantom center, left, right, and surround channels within a two-speaker or stereo headphone setup. It is able to take any 5.1 channel input source and recreate a surround sound experience with just two speakers. In addition, surround sensation can also expand two-channel compressed audio signals (such as MP3) for a more surround-like listening experience.

SRS Labs is another company that also offers innovative technologies that can enhance the home theater experience (Note: As of July 23th, 2012, SRS Labs is now officially a part of DTS ).

Tru-Surround has the ability to take multi-channel encoded sources, such as Dolby Digital, and reproduce the surround effect by just using two-speakers. The result is not as impressive as true Dolby Digital 5.1 (the front and side surround effects are impressive, but the rear surround effects fall a little short, with the sense they are coming from just to rear of your head rather than from the back of the room). However, with many consumers reluctant to fill their room with six or seven loudspeakers, Tru-Surround and Tru-SurroundXT do give the ability to enjoy 5.1 channel sound within a normally-limited two channel listening environment.

Circle Surround, on the other hand, approaches surround sound in a unique way. While Dolby Digital and DTS approach surround sound for a precise directional standpoint (specific sounds emanating from specific speakers), Circle Surround emphasizes sound immersion. To accomplish this, a normal 5.1 audio source is encoded down to two channels, then re-decoded back into 5.1 channels and redistributed back to the 5 speakers (plus subwoofer) in such a way as to create a more immersible sound without loosing the directionality of the original 5.1 channel source material.

The results are more impressive than that of Tru-Surround or Tru-Surround XT.

First, panning sounds such as flying planes, speeding cars, or trains, sound even as they cross the sound stage; often in DD and DTS, panning sounds will "dip" in intensity as they move from one speaker to the next.

Also, rear-to-front and front-to-rear sounds flow smoother as well. Second, environmental sounds, such as thunder, rain, wind, or waves full the sound field much better than in DD or DTS. For example, instead of hearing rain coming from several directions, the points in the soundfield between those directions are filled, thus placing you within the rain storm, not just listening to it.

Circle Surround provides an enhancement of Dolby Digital and similar surround sound source material without degrading the original intent of the surround sound mix.

Circle Surround II takes this concept further by adding an additional rear center channel, thus providing an anchor for sounds emanating from directly behind the listener.

Surround Sound is not limited to the large-multi channel system, but can also be applied to headphone listening. SRS Labs, Dolby Labs, and Yamaha all have incorporated surround sound technology with the headphone listening environment.

Normally, when listening to audio (either music or movies) the sound seems to originate from within your head, which is unnatural. Dolby Headphone SRS Headphone, Yamaha Silent Cinema, and Smyth Research employ technology that not only gives the listener an enveloping sound, but removes it from within listener's head and places the sound field in the front and side space around the head, which is more like listening to a regular speaker-based surround sound system.

In another development, DTS has developed DTS Headphone:X that can provide up to an 11.1 channel surround sound listening experience using any pair of headphones plugged into a listening device, such as a smartphone, portable media player, or home theater receiver that is equipped with DTS Headphone:X processing.

Higher Definition Surround Sound Technologies: Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, and DTS-HD Master Audio

With the introduction of Blu-ray Disc and HD-DVD. in conjunction with the HDMI interface connection, the development of high definition surround sound formats in both DTS (in the form of both DTS-HD and DTS-HD Master Audio ) and Dolby Digital (in the form of Dolby Digital Plus and Dolby TrueHD ) provides extended accuracy and realism.

The increased storage capacity of Blu-ray and HD-DVD, and wider bandwidth transfer capabilities of HDMI. which is required for accessing Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, and DTS-HD, have allowed for true, discreet, audio reproduction for up to 7.1 Channels of surround sound, while still being backwards compatible with older 5.1 channel surround sound formats and audio/video components.

We had our first date at The Fat Radish in the Lower East Side. They have the best roasted carrots, and my favorite tequila jalapeno drink.

Before the date, Tim had a messenger deliver a cute note: “Me + You x 40. Ready?”

Truthfully, I am quite nervous. However, I know that when an opportunity scares me, I must go for it. I don’t like having fears. No matter what the outcome, it will certainly be an interesting experience. Hopefully we can have some fun along the way, too.

Did you learn anything new about Timothy?

We discussed Tim’s relationship patterns, and how he’s in a constant cycle between three women. There is always one girl he’s really excited about that he’s trying to go out with, a second girl he’s been seeing for a few weeks and is getting tired of, and a third girl he’s been seeing a while and is getting ready to break up with.

He told me that when his mother got pregnant, his father made her choose between keeping the child or staying with him. It seems to me his dating style could result from this. He breaks off relationships before they get too serious to avoid the risk of abandonment. He’s built up this reputation for himself as “the player,” but I see past the facade. He’s been a great friend, and I know he’s a very kind person. We all have our issues and cope with life differently. Sometimes I think the “normal” people are just people you don’t know well enough yet.

My parents married at a young age, and have a successful marriage. I wonder if that is part of the reason I am always trying to find the right person and why I feel like such failure when a relationship doesn’t work out.

How do you feel about this relationship/project right now?

I think I have have some sort of guard up preventing myself from seeing Tim as anything more than a very close friend. As his relationship patterns are the opposite of mine, a part of me fears that if we were to really date, one of us might wind up getting hurt. I don’t want to ruin our friendship. Are there lesbian dating rules ?

Lesbians all over the world struggle with the question of dating protocol every single day. After all, you’re two women, for goodness sake. How do you know who is supposed to wear the pants and pay for dinner? Invite you in? Go in for the kiss? The truth is, there’s no definitive answer about a lot of these things.

From the first date to a long term relationship, you have to figure things out how to make things work in your best interest. No need to fear, though. Even though there aren’t any cookie mold answers to all your questions about lesbian dating rules, there are certainly some good rules to live by.

Who pays?

It’s an age-old question, and one that causes all of us anxiety at some point as we look at the bill sitting on the table and wonder if we should grab it … Or let her grab it … Or offer to go halfsies?

In general, if you’ve initiated the date, offer to pay for it. After all, it was your idea. Sure, she might wave you off and insist on paying for her share. But offering is the right thing to do (and being prepared to follow up with paying is also essential.)

If your date initiated the date, do at least offer to pay for your half. Depending on your own beliefs, the way she handles that situation might have a bit more meaning to you. (i. e. If she actually lets you pay for your half, your beautiful illusion of a girl-in-shining-armor might be tarnished on the spot.

For instance, I was out with a woman once, and it came time to pay the check. I like to consider myself a pretty big tomboy, but she in this case was a little more “butch” than I was. She had asked me out, but I did offer to pay my share simply to be courteous (I wasn’t sure if I was really feeling her, if you know what I mean.) Over time, you may find that you always tend to hang out at one place over another. If that’s the case, just touch base once in awhile to make sure both of you are okay with that. You don’t want to offend her by always insisting on your place or never offering to invite her to your place. Similarly, you don’t want to feel obligated to always have her over or to always go to her house. If you’re close enough to be spending that much time together, you shouldn’t have a hard time having the “Your place or mine?” talk at any given point in your dating history.

The Advantage of Dating After 30

Two women step out of their front doors on a Friday night in New York City. It is the middle of winter and a light snow is just starting to fall. Both women are dressed up and heading out to meet with their respective friends for some drinks. One woman is 23 years old and the other is 32. Both are single and want little more than to ultimately find true love.

The 23-year-old has had one serious boyfriend in her life. She slept with him during all of the 3 years they dated, until he broke up with her soon after they graduated from college. She recently had an exciting night of sex with a guy she met in a bar who was incredibly attractive. He had seemed interested in her - he was even affectionate in bed; but now he isn't calling. While she knows she was probably too immature to get married previously, she also knows that her friends and extended family have started raising eyebrows. However, in the past two years she's really started to see trends and mistakes in her dating history, and she encountered a few ideas in books and online, and these have really changed her outlook. Then, by fate (she knows now it was just coincidence), they had both walked out of a bar at the same time (closing time). She'd been a little tipsy and given in when her girlfriends pressured her to go ask him for his number. It had felt a bit strange to do it, but in the end they dated for eight months, so for a while she thought it was the right move - at least until he dumped her for a girl who he said was more "his type ."

The 23-year-old meets her girlfriends, who are waiting in a big crowd at the velvet rope outside the nightclub. The single question that consumes her mind is whether or not she is hot enough to be let inside. She starts to feel nervous. She knows she is hot, but the other girls waiting to get in look like supermodels. But as the bouncer lifts the rope and chooses her and her friends before all the others, her excitement and ego both skyrocket. As the 32-year-old orders her drink, she chats with the bartender for a bit, because she knows that even a brief conversation with a stranger (male or female) will get her into a more social mood, which might help later if any men want to talk to her. The 32-year-old returns to her friends after her conversation with the bartender to find that a tall, very stylish and attractive man was asking her friends if they could introduce him to her. Her friends oblige, and he immediately isolates her from the group. This screams "predator" to her, but she knows that not all men have great game. so she doesn't bail yet. They talk for a few minutes, but the 32-year-old is further turned off by his constant smirk and the way he keeps touching her arm. She's met men like this before - in fact, one of her ex boyfriends approached her with the same cocky, sexual demeanor. They dated for about a year, but that transparent facade of pseudo-confidence remained throughout the relationship. She eventually dumped him and now considers the whole year wasted - at least from a dating perspective. When the arm-touching becomes a little too much to handle, she tells him it was nice to meet him and politely excuses herself to use the restroom.

The 23-year old and her friends are approached by a bouncer who invites them to drink with "some gentlemen at the VIP table." The 23-year-old takes a liking to the only guy at the table dressed in a suit; he is very good-looking and seems to be the leader, even though she guesses he is only 24 or 25. She is sure that she can have him because she knows she is hotter than her friends. By now she is getting fairly drunk and they start to dance. After several minutes his hands are holding her waist (she loves that feeling) and they kiss. He sits down with her to "take a break from dancing" and they start to make out on the couch. The music and alcohol drown out everything else and she is lost in the moment.

The 32-year-old returns from the bathroom. Her two friends are now talking to a group of three guys, one of whom is listening more than participating. She can tell from his posture that is isn't shy or socially awkward - but rather patient. This interests her. She intentionally positions herself right next to him as she re-joins the group. He introduces himself and they start to make small talk. She wouldn't have picked him out from the crowd for his looks, but his understated and confident demeanor is confirmed and grows on her as they talk. He is clearly experienced and intelligent, and she judges that he is probably at least in his mid-thirties. Although he is older, she's learned over time that this is better than the opposite. At one point it crosses her mind how glad she is to be in a venue where she can hear him clearly. Conversations like this were always impossible in the nightclubs she used to go to in her twenties. Their conversational chemistry is great, and they continue talking for almost two hours.

The 23-year-old is hammered by the time the lights come on at closing time, and she considers herself the luckiest girl in the club because of the guy she "picked up." He invites her back to his hotel room to "keep the party going." Despite her drunkenness, she hesitates. She knows she doesn't want to sleep with him - she remembers how that turned out last time. Мишель Мей, диетолог и автор книги «А я вообще голодна или что делать, когда диета не работает», утверждает, что большая часть проблем с внезапным набором веса связана с банальным недосыпом.
