MOSLEM WOMEN FROM UZBEKISTAN

UZBEK women

(about women from uzbekistan)

Moslem women in Uzbekistan,

tradition & customs in Uzbekistan,

obedient wives from Uzbekistan.

The inhabitants of Uzbekistan are renowned for the considerable amount of esteem that they give to women. Women are treated as legitimate members of society and are open to a vast array of possibilities for personal development. In today's society, many Uzbek men have already succumbed to the fact that the modern Uzbek woman is far from merely a housewife. The men already share the roles of provider and protector of the family with their wives since Uzbek women are knowledgeable, dynamic and industrious.

Main religion in Uzbekistan is ISLAM. Therefore, majority of women in Uzbekistan are moslems.

There is a proverb in Uzbekistan: “ When you educate your son, you educate a person; when you educate your daughter, you educate a family !” This is in reference to the vital role that Uzbek women play in family life, providing a moral and spiritual foundation.

As before, the institution of family is still very strong in Uzbekistan and it is considered to be the most important asset in life. It is evident that Uzbekistan has one the lowest divorce rates. As a rule, Uzbek families contain many children, especially in rural areas where women essentially run the household, combining this with cultural activities such as spinning, embroidery or carpet weaving. Handcrafted artefacts adorn each home which is lovingly decorated.

Generally speaking, the settled way of life brings a solicitous attitude towards the household. The courtyards and even the streets near to the homes are kept in immaculate condition. The national cuisine of Uzbekistan is esteemed for its practicality and also for its superb preparation. The exemplary Uzbek pilaf, the aromatic, translucent shurpa, the lush Manta rays prepared from pastry and meat, the perfumed smoke and spiced shashlik are world renowned. And all of these delights come from the talents of Uzbek women!

Welcome in Uzbekistan - Xush kelibsiz

At the heart of Central Asia, Uzbekistan is situated between the two big rivers, Amu Darya and Syr Darya. It borders on Kazakhstan to the northwest and north, on Kyrgyzstan - to the northwest, on Tajikistan - to the east and southeast, on Turkmenistan - to the southwest, and on Afghanistan - to the south. The territory of Uzbekistan is 448,900 sq. km. It stretches 930 km from north to south, and 1,425 km from west to east. The total length of its borders is 6,221 km. The border regions are: the Usturt Plateau and western shore of the Aral Sea to the north, Termez district of Surkhandarya province to the south, Ferghana Valley to the east, and Usturt Plateau to the west. The territory of the country stretches from southeast to northwest.

Uzbekistan's natural world is very diverse. It is composed of desert areas and snowy mountains, rivers and completely dry lands. The most part of its territory lies in the Turon plain, where there are no sudden steep-drops and hills. The Turon plate and mainland, which later became the Tian Shan and Pamir - Alai Mountains, were formed in the Paleolithic period. Later, the sea covered the plate for a long time. The mountain chains are thought to have fully developed during the Alps orogenesis.

The mountain ranges blocked the humidity from the Indian Ocean. It caused considerable climatic change: the weather became dry and huge desert areas appeared. As rivers and winds kept changing their directions, the upper layer of soil was continuously displaced from one place to another. It led to the formation of the Kyzyl Kum and Kara Kum deserts.

Suzani Embroidery of Central Asia

The Uzbek women of Uzbekistan and Tajikistan in central Asia are known for their beautiful embroidered Suzani panels, worked in silk threads in hand embroidery on a heavy cotton or silk/cotton blend fabric background. Many of the patterns on historical and antique cloths have been traced to the Bukhara (also famous for its tambour embroidery) area of what was once part of India as well as Shah¬risyabz . Nurata . Khujand . and Baisun areas.

Suzani have been traditionally made for use as wall hangings, bedspreads, furniture throws, pillows, or table coverings. They are hand-embroidered textiles traditionally made by family members for a Central Asian girl’s dowry. The making of these gorgeous textiles starts when a baby girl is born, and embroidery on these items continues with the help of family and friends, until the girl reaches marrying age.

A bride from a well-off family would often have ten to fifteen of these hand-embroidered textiles in her dowry at the time of marriage. These textiles would be used as bed coverings (especially for the bridal bed), dividers between living and sleeping quarters, as well as prayer mats and wrapping cloths. A single Suzani could have multiple functions, depending on its size.

As the popularity of Central Asian textiles increased, so has the frenzy to collect these unique pieces of traditional textile art, with collectors snatching up prized samples of Suzani at flea markets and antique markets in the former Soviet Union (Uzbekistan was under Russian rule from 1860's gaining its independence from the Soviet Union in 1991) and throughout central Asia.

Suzani were highly prized by their owners and used only for special occasions, which is why so many antique samples are available today. When not in use, the items were kept carefully folded and stowed away in trunks.

The designs for Suzani were worked in bright, lively colors of embroidery thread on a natural-colored background. The embroidery fabric was often dyed before use with a tea bath or a dye made of onion skins to darken the fabric before embroidery.

The embroidery designs and patterns used in Suzani are thought to have derived from pre-Islamic motifs used in central Asia and were passed along the silk road. They are believed to have been influenced by Zoroastrianism. zodiac signs and other magical symbols, which have evolved over time into the geometric designs and floral motifs that are used in this style of embroidery. Motifs featuring birds, fishes, trees, fruits, plants and herbs as well as knives and daggers are used symbolically to signify fertility, purity of the heart, curative powers and protection from danger and evil spirits.

The pattern on the next page features a traditional circular motif featuring flowers and concentric rings, each featuring a different design, and can be worked in basic surface embroidery stitches.
